Whilst looking at some new colours to play around with for my next batch of new nail polishes, I noticed there were some glitters on a stockist’s website.

“Wow!” I thought “they look really exciting!”

It got my creative juices flowing with all the fun polishes I could create and, before I knew it, I’d ordered a small sample of a few different colours to play with.

It was only when they arrived, that I stopped to think and ask myself what they were made of.

The answer is PET (Polyethylene terephthalate), the same stuff that polyester cloth is made from.  This is not good because it does not biodegrade.  It will break down into smaller and smaller pieces in UV light but it never completely disappears.

(There’s a good article on the ‘How Stuff Works’ website if you want to read more: https://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/everyday-myths/how-long-does-it-take-for-plastics-to-biodegrade.htm)

“But glitter in such tiny bits surely can’t do any damage?” I hear you ask.

We all know that glitter really can get everywhere but does it really cause that much harm?

Actually, the tiny bits are exactly the reason it does so much damage.  The particles are so small that they pass through the filters at our water treatment plants and end up out in the environment.  UV light will continue to break them down but marine life will digest these tiny particles and the PET enters our food chain.   Not good for the environment or for us.

(You may also have read recent stories about Nurseries banning glitter for the same reason).

Now, I know that you find glitter everywhere – make-up, Christmas cards, hairbands and so on – and that me making it stand won’t single-handedly save the planet.  And I don’t want to be a killjoy!  However, I have decided that Fresh Therapies products will not contain glitter until I can source a biodegradable or planet-friendly version.  And then we can all shine together!
